Capture the presence of someones life in and original piece of artwork that will live on for generations to come.
As of right now Josiah primarily creates portraits for collectors in Midwest, if you live a significant distance from the area and would like to commission a portrait, travel fees may be added to the final commission price.
The Portrait commission process starts with free consultation; An information-gathering meeting with the collector arranged to understand his or her objectives for the painting, as well as to discuss issues such as size, clothing, backgrounds, props, etc. After this Josiah will prepare a proposal to be presented outlining the details and costs of the painting for the client’s approval before proceeding. Once the details of the portrait are solidified Initial photos are taken for the purpose of concept and composition development from these Josiah will create a full-size sketch detailing the direction for the painting to be presented for client collaboration and approval before starting the painting. After the direction for the painting is confirmed a second photo shoot may be required, and if possible a sitting from life (approximately a 3–hour painting/drawing session) will be conducted to provide additional reference material for finer details. When the portrait is nearly finished, the client is invited to the studio for a viewing.
FRAME SELECTION (optional) – Josiah has access to a fully outfitted wood shop and over 15 years of custom woodworking experience at his disposal. Custom framing is available to be crafted to best enhance the painting as well as compliment the decor of where it will hang. If desired, framing samples are presented at the portrait review. The final frame is an additional cost and is estimated separately. Custom framing takes approximately 1-5 weeks to be completed. When the painting and framing is complete, the final piece is presented to the client.
Listing standard fees can often be imprecise since each portrait is an original piece of art and a highly customized effort incorporating unique suggestions by the client. However typically oil commisions cost between $500 - $3500 depending on size and complexity of detail. Based on the number of factors potential clients must consider, Josiah would prefer to arrange an information-gathering meeting or converse in detail over email with the client to understand his or her objectives for the painting. After the meeting, a proposal is presented outlining the details and costs of the commissioned art.
Prior to the meeting here are some considerations to give Josiah more information to provide a precise cost:
• Approximate Size
• Orientation (horizontal, vertical or square)
• How many figures, pets or animals
• Neutral background or complex setting
• Special props or furniture
• Timing for completion
• Frame (rare antique, hand-crafted or quick and simple)
Project budgets may vary and some may have more flexibility. Josiah can work backwards from a clients’ budget or provide costs based on their needs.
